Аннотация: Results are given of development and investigations of a compact cooler for application in electronics, based on an open-loop oscillating heat pipe. The cooler operation is investigated, where water, methanol, and R141b Freon are used as working fluids under conditions of uniform and concentrated heat input. The effective operation of the device is demonstrated in the heat load range from 5 to 250 W. The “heat source-ambient air” minimal thermal resistance of 0.35°C/W was reached with water under uniform heat load of 250 W. The maximal value of heat load density is 75 W/cm2 with the heat flux concentration on the surface of 1 cm2, where methanol is used as working fluid

Аннотация: Loop heat pipes (LHPs) posses a great variety of valuable properties, which make them quite promising for application both on the Earth and in space. Among these are the LHP high heat-transport capacity at an any orientation in the field of mass forces, good mass-and-size parameters and the possibility of an arbitrary configuration of transport lines. At the same time such a drawback of LHPs of the conventional type as the instability of start up and operation in the region of low heat loads reduces their performance. The problem is connected, in a general case, with the unfavourable distribution of the vapor and the liquid phases of the working fluid in the evaporator. There is reason to believe that the LHP operation can also be significantly affected by zero-g conditions, in which the distribution of a working fluid is pre-determined only by the action of surface forces and the thermocapillary phenomena. The paper performs a general analysis of the necessary conditions imposed on the construction of LHP and some designs that contribute to the retention of serviceability in zero-g conditions at low heat loads. It gives the results of laboratory investigations of an adapted ammonia LHP with a heat-transfer capacity up to 2 kWxm

Аннотация: In the theoretical interpretation of the kinetics of first-order phase transitions, thermodynamic concepts developed long ago by Gibbs are widely employed giving some basic qualitative insights into these processes. However, from a quantitative point of view, the results of such analysis, based on the classical Gibbs approach and involving in addition the capillarity approximation, are often not satisfactory. Some progress can be reached here by the van der Waals and more advanced density functional methods of description of thermodynamically heterogeneous systems having, however, its limitations in application to the interpretation of experimental data as well. Moreover, both mentioned theories—Gibbs’ and density functional approaches—lead to partly contradicting each other’s results. As shown in preceding papers, by generalizing Gibbs’ approach, existing deficiencies and internal contradictions of these two well-established theories can be removed and a new generally applicable tool for the interpretation of phase formation processes can be developed. In the present analysis, a comparative analysis of the basic assumptions and predictions of the classical and the generalized Gibbs approaches is given. It is shown, in particular, that—interpreted in terms of the generalized Gibbs approach—the critical cluster as determined via the classical Gibbs approach corresponds not to a saddle but to a ridge point of the appropriate thermodynamic potential hypersurface. By this reason, the classical Gibbs approach (involving the classical capillarity approximation) overestimates as a rule the work of critical cluster formation in nucleation theory and, in general, considerably.

Аннотация: The prospects of application of a mechanical model in describing the properties of planar and curved interfaces at low temperatures are investigated. It is shown that, in the framework of such approach, the Tolman length determining the first-order curvature correction to the surface tension, γ, is equal to zero. In the range of small values of the radius of curvature, R, the mechanical approach overestimates considerably the value of γ. For the Lennard-Jones potential the non-analyticity in the dependence γ(1/R) is found at 1/R = 0. It disappears for potentials decreasing more rapidly with the distance between the particles

Аннотация: This paper is devoted to the state-of-the-art and technical potentials of the pulse heating method for the thin wire probe created in the Ural thermophysical school for studying the kinetics of spontaneous boiling and the related phenomenon of liquid attainable superheating. Special attention is paid to the search for technical means for controlling the power of the probe heating in a pulse experiment with the thermophysical properties of the substance taken into account. Applications of three particular cases are considered: techniques for the constant heating power, the thermal stabilization of the pulse-heated probe, and cooling of the shock-heated probe for investigating the behavior of multicomponent and high-molecular fluids essentially superheated above the temperature of phase equilibrium and/or temperature of molecule thermodestruction in a quasi-static process. Opportunities for application of the method are presented, in particular, for fast detection of volatile admixtures (including their traces) in high-molecular fluids, e.g., in oils of power equipment

Аннотация: Recently, Kontogeorgis et al. [G.M. Kontogeorsis, I.V. Yakoumis, P. Coustikos, D.P. Tassios, Fluid Phase Equilibria, 140 (1–2) (1997) 145–146] developed a generalized expression for the ratio of the critical temperature to the critical pressure (Tc/Pc) with the van der Waals surface area (Qw). Despite the extensive database involved in the development of this equation, the heaviest compounds involved were n-tetracosane in terms of Tc/Pc ratio and PEG-400 in terms of highest Tc. The maximum Tc/Pc value was below 100. The correlation is further validated in light of recent critical data appearing in the literature for heavy compounds with Tc/Pc ratio up to 185. The satisfactory agreement between experimental and predicted Tc/Pc ratios justifies its application to high molecular weight compounds other than those employed for its development

Аннотация: An experimental approach to determination of the density of liquid superheated with respect to the liquid-vapor equilibrium temperature, including the range of high degrees of superheating, is developed. The approach is based on application of an optical fiber method combined with a pure bubble chamber. Performance of the method for investigation of the refractive index and density for superheated liquids as functions of temperature and pressure is illustrated in experiments with n-hexane as a reference substance for thermophysical measurements. The relative density measurements are performed with a resolution up to 10-4 at a characteristic time of 1 ms. For absolute measurements, the setup should be calibrated by the known data on the liquid density for the saturation line
