Аннотация: The Beattie ellipsometric method is used to investigate the index of refraction and the absorption coefficient of liquid aluminum and Al–3 at. % Ce alloy in the wavelength range from 0.44 to 2.3 mm at a temperature of 1173 K. The experimental results are used to calculate the dispersion dependences of light conductance, reflectivity, and functions of characteristic loss of electron energy. The results of measurements in the infrared (IR) spectrum are used to determine the concentration of conduction electrons, plasma frequency, relaxation frequency, and the limiting light conductance. It turns out that an addition of 3 at. % Ce to aluminum causes almost no change in the concentration of charge carriers, whereas the relaxation frequency increases, which leads to a decrease in the electrical conductivity of the liquid alloy

Аннотация: Thermogravimetric, d i f f e r e n t i a l - t h e r m o g r a p h i c , chemical, and x-ray phase analysis methods are used to study the effect of the rate at which powdered lanthanum is heated in air on the nature of the reaction products. It is found that for heating rates of up to 150 K/rain the interaction with air ends in the formation of lanthan~m oxide. At heating rates of 150-600 K/rain, a nitride phase is formed along with LazO3. Further increases in the heating rate lead to formation of the oxide phase only. The reasons for this behavior of lanthanum are examined.

Аннотация: The model of almost free electrons is used to analyze the experimentally obtained optical properties of liquid light rare-earth metals (REM) such as lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium. The electrons involved in interband transitions are divided into different groups. In so doing, the contribution by these groups of electrons to the light conductivity is taken into account. The problem of determining partial values of functions is solved in a graphic representation using the method of successive approximations, by variational selection of three parameters, namely, the height of peak, its position, and half-width. It is demonstrated that, in order to explain the experimentally obtained dispersion curves of light conductivity of liquid lanthanum and cerium, it is sufficient to divide the electrons involved in interband transitions into no more than eight groups and, in the case of praseodymium and neodymium, into no more than nine groups. Аннотация: The form of the dispersion dependence of the optical conductivity of liquid rare earth metals (REM) in the range of photon energies of about 2 eV is defined by the contribution of the maximum of the density of electron states, which emerges during the Bragg scattering of electrons from the first coordination sphere of a melt. It is shown that, for liquid cerium, the experimental dependence of the optical conductivity in this range of photon energies may be described with due regard for the effective electron mass close to the value of 1.37. It is noted that the inclusion of the effective electron mass in the classical Drude equation for the optical conductivity makes it possible to estimate the value of this parameter on the basis of the data of optical experiment

Аннотация: The wetting of titanium carbide by molten Al–rare earth alloys was studied. The physicochemical properties of the alloys were correlated with the contact angle and the carbon and oxygen affinities of the substrate and alloy. The properties of the alloys were investigated as a function of composition. The phase relations in the Al-rich corners of the Al–Y and Al–Nd phase diagrams were refined using viscosity data. The x-ray microanalysis and Auger electron spectroscopy data were used to assess the melt structure, adsorption behavior of the melt components at the liquid–gas and liquid–solid interfaces, interfacial area, and composition of the transition layer. The introduction of rare-earth additions into Al was found to reduce the temperature at which good adhesion to TiC can be achieved by 100–200 K
