Аннотация: The concentration dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and lattice parameter of cubic vanadium monoxide have been measured in the composition range from VO0.81 to VO1.07. Near the stoichiometric composition VO1.00, the concentration dependences exhibit a stepwise increase in the specific magnetic susceptibility??(by approximately 0.7 X 10(-6) cm(3)/g) and lattice constant (by about 0.002 nm). These effects can be??related to the concentration phase transition, which occurs in vanadium monoxide with a change from a substoichiometric composition to superstoichiometric. At such a transition, along with a decrease in the concentration of oxygen vacancies, tetrahedrally coordinated vanadium interstitials are formed, as a result of which the??B1 structure changes to a more complex cubic phase structure with the same space group??Fm-3m

Аннотация: An X-ray diffraction study indicates that nonstoichiometric vanadium monoxide VOy ≡ VxOz (y = z/x) has a cubic structure of the DO3 type (space group Fm m), where vanadium atoms are not only at the 4(a) sites of the metal fcc sublattice, but also at the tetrahedral 8(c) sites. This circumstance fundamentally distinguishes monoxide VOy from strongly nonstoichiometric MXy compounds with the B1 structure and the same space group, where atoms M and X and structural vacancies and of the metal and nonmetal sublattices, respectively, are distributed over the 4(a) and 4(b) sites. The dependence of the filling factor q of the tetrahedral interstices by vanadium atoms on the relative content y of oxygen in VOy has been obtained. It has been shown that the composition of cubic vanadium monoxide should be represented as VOy ≡ VxOz ≡ Vx – 2q 1 – x + 2qOz 1 –z, taking into account the structure

Аннотация: Neutron and X-ray diffraction analyses are applied to studying the defect structure of synthesis-temperature quenched and low-temperature annealed vanadium monoxides VO (0.90≤y≤0.97) close to the equiatomic monoxide VO1.0. It is found that the monoxides VO0.90 and VO0.97 contain structural vacancies not only in the oxygen sublattice, but also in the metal sublattice. In addition to the cubic disordered phase VOy with the structure B1, the monoclinic superstructure V14O6 with space group C2/m is present in the synthesized VO0.90 sample and in the annealed VO0.90 and VO0.97 samples. The formation of the V14O6 superstructure is attributed to the ordering of oxygen atoms and nonmetal vacancies in the lattice of the tetragonal solid solution of oxygen in vanadium. No simultaneous ordering of metal and oxygen vacancies in two sublattices of the cubic vanadium is observed

Аннотация: The disorder–order transition in cubic vanadium monoxide VOy(y= 1.29, 1.30) possessing a B1 type structure and containing vacancies only in the metal sublattice has been studied by X-ray diffraction and symmetry analyses. It is established that the formation of a tetragonal (space group l41/amd) ordered V52O64phase in cubic vanadium monoxide VOyproceeds in the form of the first-order phase transition via a channel involving 22 nonequivalent superstructural vectors of four stars ({k10}, {k4}, {k3}, and {k2}). The distribution function of V atoms in the tetragonal V52 O64 superstructure is calculated, and it is found that the real ordered V51.6O64phase exhibits significant atomic displacements. The boundaries of the domain of existence of the V52O64 phase at 54–60% O are determined in the phase diagram of the V–O system

Аннотация: A coarse grained powder of nonstoichiometric cubic vanadium monoxide VOy is disintegrated in a Retch PM 200 planetary ball mill. Milling of the coarse grained vanadium monoxide powder VOy at a rate of rotation of 500 rpm for 2 h significantly broadens diffraction lines, and the crystal structure of vanadium monoxide VO1.00 after milling remains the same. High resolution scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies of the microstructure of vanadium monoxide demonstrate that high energy milling can produce vanadium monoxide powders with an average crystallite size of 23 ± 10 nm. The vanadium monoxide produced by milling has a crystallite size that is half the crystallite size in the titanium monoxide produced by severe plastic deformation

Аннотация: We have performed ab initio calculations to systematically investigate electronic properties and magnetism of insulating non-magnetic beryllium monoxide nanotubes (BeO NTs) induced by nonmagnetic sp impurities: boron, carbon and nitrogen, as well as by nanotube wall defects: Be or??O vacancies.We found that in the presence of these sp impurities, which replace oxygen atoms, the nonmagnetic BeO NTs transform into magnetic semiconductors, which acquire magnetization caused by spin splitting of (B, C, N) 2p states located in the forbidden gap of a BeO tube. The magnetic moments of the impurities vary from 0.65 to 1.60mB. It was also found that a beryllium vacancy leads to vacancyinduced magnetic moments (at about 0.6mB) arising on the nearest oxygen atoms and berylliumdeficient BeO nanotubes adopt half-metallic-like properties. On the contrary, when (B, C, N) dopants??substitute for Be atoms or in the presence of an oxygen vacancy, the non-magnetic state of the BeO??tubes is retained. The results obtained have been compared with theoretically predicted magnetization effects for doped and non-stoichiometric crystalline BeO

Аннотация: Atomic displacements in the lattice of the tetragonal V52O64 superstructure have been experimentally deter mined. It has been found that atomic displacement waves, which are attributed to the formation of the short- range displacement order, appear in the vanadium and oxygen sublattices of this superstructure. It has been shown that the V52O64 superstructure is formed on the basis of disordered superstoichiometric cubic vanadium monoxide with the short-range order in the metallic sublattice. The character of the short range order is such that vanadium atoms occupying tetrahedral positions are in the environment of four vacant sites of the vanadium sublattice. This means that the superstoichiometric VO>1.0 vanadium monoxide has a cubic structure differing from the B1 type structure characteristic of most of the strongly nonstoichiometric cubic compounds MXy (X = C, N, O) of transition metals

Аннотация: Symmetry analysis is carried out for the ordered phases of cubic monoxide TiOy with relative oxygen contents y < 1 and y > 1. It is established that a partially ordered orthorhombic phase (space group Immm)—a derivative of the orthorhombic M3X2 (Vac) superstructure (at y < 1.0) or the inverse superstructure M2( )X3 (at y > 1)—may arise in TiOy . The distribution of Ti and O atoms, oxygen vacancies, and titanium vacancies in unit cells of the orthorhombic ordered phases is determined. The phases are formed through the order–disorder transition channel along two rays of a non-Lifshitz star {k4}, and the ordering proceeds as a first-order phase transition. The distribution functions of Ti atoms over the sites of metallic and O atoms over the sites of nonmetallic sublattices are calculated for the orthorhombic superstructures of cubic titanium monoxide TiOy

Аннотация: The conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of disordered titanium monoxide TiOy (0.920<= y<=,1.262) containing vacancies in titanium and oxygen sublattices are investigated. For TiOy monoxides with an oxygen content y<=1.069, the temperature dependences of the conductivity are described by the Bloch–Gruneisen function at a Debye temperature ranging from 400 to 480 K and the temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility are characterized by the contribution from the Pauli paramagnetism due to conduction electrons. The behavior of the conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of TiOy monoxides with an oxygen content<=y<= 1.087 is characteristic of narrow-gap semiconductors with nondegenerate charge carriers governed by the Boltzmann statistics. The band gap deltaE between the valence and conduction bands of TiOy monoxides with<=y<= 1.087 falls in the range 0.06–0.17 eV

Аннотация: Using the zone method of a linear combination of plane waves for the supercell model, there have been studied energy and electron states of beryllium monoxide with intrinsic point defects: the vacancy in the sub-lattice of beryllium + interstitial atom of Be {V(Be)+Be(i)}. The most stable among the considered configurations of defects are the vacancies and interstitial atoms of beryllium Be(i)o occupying octahedral positions at R(V(Be)– Be(i)0 ) ~ 3.15-3.35 Å distances from each other. Depending on the configuration of defects, the forbidden gap of beryllium oxide can change by ~0.4-2.4eV

Аннотация: Local atomic environment of vacancies in nonstoichiometric titanium monoxide ranging in composition from TiO0.74 to TiO1.26 was studied by electron–positron annihilation. Analysis of the Doppler broadening spectra of the annihilation gamma line for titanium and liquid oxygen showed that positrons in titanium monoxide are trapped by titanium vacancies. Experiments revealed that the lifetime of positrons in ordered and disordered titanium monoxide TiOy increases with increasing oxygen content y and varies from 184 to 210 ps. Data on the valence electron density permitted the prediction that the lifetime of free positrons in stoichiometric titanium monoxide is about 140 ps and the lifetime of positrons localized in an oxygen vacancy is about 170 ps. The method used to analyze the gamma-line Doppler broadening spectra makes it possible to determine the type and number of atoms around a vacancy and to investigate order–disorder phase transformations in nonstoichiometric compounds

Аннотация: The influence of the ordering of titanium and oxygen atoms on the Madelung energy has been studied using the computer simulation. The dependence of the Madelung constant on the crystal size for the titanium monoxide with ordered and disordered distributions of atoms and vacancies has been obtained for the first time. It has been demonstrated that the Madelung energy in the ordered titanium monoxide is considerably (by 6%) lower than that in the disordered monoxide. The electrostatic interaction between titanium and oxygen ions stabilizes the ordered phase in titanium monoxide up to high temperatures and should substantially affect the disordering processes that occur in this compound at high temperatures

Аннотация: The relationship between the short and long range orders in various phases of nonstoichiometric titanium monoxide (TiOy) has been analyzed for the first time. The types of the local environment of lattice sites in the metal and nonmetal (oxygen) sublattices of Ti5O5, Ti3O2, Ti2O3, and Ti4O5 superstructures are described. It is established that, in phases where ordering takes place simultaneously in both sublattices, all parameters of the superstructural short range order determining the positions of atoms and vacancies in the first three coordination spheres can be uniquely expressed via the long range order parameters. If the ordering takes place only in one sublattice, then five of the six short range order parameters vanish. It is shown that, using data on the maximum absolute values of six short range order parameters and on the fractions of occupied atomic positions in titanium and oxygen sublattices, it is possible to predict the type of ordered phase expected to form in the nonstoichiometric titanium monoxide TiOy

Аннотация: Structural vacancies were directly observed in nonstoichiometric ordered titanium monoxide using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy under a magnification of 4x 106. The observation of structural vacancies became possible due to their ordering and the formation of continuous vacancy channels in certain crystallographic directions. Microdiffraction was employed to orient the sample in the direction permitting the observation of vacancy channels. Transmission electron microscopy providing a magnification of tens of thousands of times revealed that titanium monoxide grains do not contain cracks and macropores and confirmed that the free volume detected picnometrically in the titanium monoxide is concentrated in structural vacancies on the titanium and oxygen sublattices

Аннотация: A method using the atom–vacancy ordering phenomenon for the visualization of structural vacancies in crystals was suggested and implemented. The ordered nonstoichiometric titanium monoxide Ti5O5 was taken as the object of investigation, because the structural vacancies in this compound can be observed due to the formation of continuous vacancy channels in certain crystallographic directions. Аннотация: The order–disorder phase transition in vanadium monoxide of substoichiometric compositions VO y has been studied for the first time in situ by the Faraday method with a pendulum magnetic balance of the Domenically type. A minimum is found on the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of vanadium monoxide of different compositions at a temperature of about 700 K. X-ray diffraction analysis performed before and after measuring the magnetic susceptibility confirmed the change in the structure of vanadium monoxide and the possibility of atom–vacancy processes upon cooling and heating of the samples
