This study demonstrates that the number, position, and chemical nature of substituents in the biphenyl molecule significantly affect the efficiency of its degradation. The presence of an unsubstituted aromatic ring in the substrate structure facilitates oxidation via the “upper pathway” with the formation of hydroxylated chlorobenzoic acids. The strain Rhodococcusopacus CH628 exhibited high activity toward mono- and di-substituted congeners. In the case of mono-hydroxy-chlorobiphenyls, the introduction of a hydroxyl group enhanced substrate bioavailability, leading to increased biodegradation rates. These findings confirm the critical role of substrate structure in its accessibility for microbial degradation.
